£55 million regeneration of former Coal Board homes estate...

Housing before the redevelopment in Coalville

Weston Heights is a five-year community regeneration scheme on the site of the former Coalville estate, an ex-mining community of 406 prefabricated houses.

When the Coal Board sold the houses in the 1980s, those not bought by tenants were sold at auction to private investors.

The construction was later found to be defective, rendering the homes ‘unmortgagable’, and over the past 20 years the high level of poor housing and predominance of private landlords brought the estate into decline.

The £55 million Weston Heights regeneration involves the demolition of 254 of the old homes, which are being replaced with nearly 300 new homes for outright sale, shared ownership and rent.

The development will also feature new public open space including a play area and sports field.

The programme, which is being delivered on behalf of Renew by regeneration company The Compendium Group, started in 2007 and the entire scheme is expected to be complete in 2012.

Other partners in the scheme are Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Riverside Housing and Coalville Residents’ Association.

It looks absolutely brilliant, as good as a new house! It makes me feel proud to live here.

I will be glad to go. It’s not a nice place to live... There’s no community left here any more.
