A total of 61 homes in Fegg Hayes are to be demolished in December 2009 to make way for better quality housing. The terrace properties in and around Oxford Road are now almost all empty and waiting to be pulled down under plans to revitalise Fegg Hayes village. In addition, 12 long-term empty homes will be fully refurbished and brought back into use at a cost of £1.3 million. And Staffordshire Housing Association (SHA) is to refurbish 30 of its properties in the area in a scheme worth £1.2 million. Dozens more houses will benefit from £300,000 of improvements, including new doors, windows, low-maintenance gardens and boundary walls. Other aspects of the scheme include £45,000 of improvements to a nearby play area and a £1.07 million proposal to build new two-bedroom houses and bungalows on the site of the former Elephant and Castle pub, which shut in 2000. Some properties in Oxford Road and neighbouring East Terrace have already been flattened in preparation for the larger-scale demolition work to come.
