Derek and Nora Durose at the demolition of their Waterloo Street home
Region: Hanley

Derek and Nora Durose, aged 77 and 79, pose for a picture in Waterloo Street, Hanley, in September 2009, as their terrace home - number 72 - is demolished as part of a RENEW North Staffordshire clearance zone. The Duroses, who have been married for 39 years, have moved to a council bungalow in nearby Picton Street. The properties in Waterloo Street had stood for 105 years and Nora was born in the back bedroom of number 72 on December 12, 1929. The house had been home to her parents and grandparents.

It looks absolutely brilliant, as good as a new house! It makes me feel proud to live here.

I will be glad to go. It’s not a nice place to live... There’s no community left here any more.
