£18 million to be spent to breathe new life into community...

Slater Street in Middleport before demolition in 2009

Middleport has been an Area of Major Intervention (AMI) since the inception of the Renew programme. Approximately £18 million is being spent on the community between 2008 and 2011.

Renew has been working with partners to provide a wider range of new housing, including homes that are affordable and homes designed for older people.

Significant clearance and newbuild has already taken place and a masterplan for the area is currently being developed.

A preferred option will shortly be agreed upon and timescales for work will soon follow.

To date, Renew has acquired 231 of the 237 properties from a cluster of 10 streets in the Slater Street area.

These were mainly pre-1900 terraced homes - with many in a poor condition and only 40 per cent being owner-occupied and 11 per cent being empty.

Surveys found most residents supported the demolition plans - provided that they were helped to find another home.

205 properties have already been knocked down and it is hoped the final 32 will be demolished in the current financial year.

I want to see the residents of this area having a voice and RENEW to take account of their views.

It looks absolutely brilliant, as good as a new house! It makes me feel proud to live here.
