Portrait of the Potteries (Aug 2010)

Photographer Martin Elliott working on the unique Potteries history project

A photojournalist is seeking people to take part in a project to mark the centenary of the federation of the Six Towns of Stoke-on-Trent.

Martin Elliott will be taking pictures of people in each of the towns over the next month as part of his Portrait of the Potteries project.

Martin, pictured below, a photographer for two decades, said: “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and the centenary is the perfect opportunity.”

Martin, of Blythe Bridge, is asking anyone who wants to take part to bring something special to them.

Hilda Shelly, aged 82, of Burslem, was snapped outside Swan Bank Methodist Church, Burslem.

She said: “I was born and brought up in Stoke from a big family and we were and are all proud of our city.”

Details of the shoots, which take place between 10am and 2pm, are:

August 12 to 14 – Burslem;

August 19 – Fenton market;

August 20 – Fenton Community Centre;

August 21 – Fenton Manor, near the pool;

August 26 to 28 – Tunstall;

August 30 to September 5 – Hanley.

A selection of Martin’s images will be displayed at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Hanley, from September 25 until January 3.

For further details call Martin on 07981 227443.

I will be glad to go. It’s not a nice place to live... There’s no community left here any more.

It looks absolutely brilliant, as good as a new house! It makes me feel proud to live here.
